NREL Computational Science Center

The Computational Science Center conducts research in computational science and related disciplines using high performance computers (HPC) as the primary tool of investigation. The Center focuses on supporting National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers with extensive experience in HPC capabilities to address scientific and engineering challenges in fields ranging from condensed matter physics to reacting flows.

In addition to basic research, the Computational Science Center acquires, provides, and manages HPC and related systems that range from small clusters to large production systems.

NREL’s current flagship system is a 1.2 Petaflop HPC system named Peregrine, composed of 1440 compute nodes with the latest Intel x86 Ivy Bridge processors and Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessors (a.k.a. MIC). Peregrine is a warm-water liquid cooled system installed in NREL’s Energy System Integration Facility, a 175,000 square foot facility housing a mixture of office space (for 220 staff), high bay and lab space, and an HPC data center. The facility is designed as a showcase, LEEDS platinum research facility. The 10,000 square foot data center itself is the world’s most energy efficient, featuring waste heat capture and re-use as well as an annualized average PUE of 1.06.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, is a laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, focused on advancing energy efficient and renewable energy technologies. For 34 years NREL has been supporting the research and development efforts of the U.S. Department of Energy. Protecting the environment by creating renewable energy resources is one of NREL’s main goals. In 2013 NREL garnered three prestigious R&D 100 Awards for the Image Processing Occupancy Sensor (IPOS), Isothermal Battery Calorimeters (IBCs), and Mono-crystalline Solar Cells.
